Stuart has a dual career as a Conductor, Music Producer and Singing Coach working in the West End and TV, for choirs and solo artistes at international level. He has been Musical Director to Dame Shirley Bassey since 2009, and has just produced her latest album, Hello Like Before. Stuart studied at the Purcell School of Music followed by two degrees at Cambridge University, including an MPhil researching into Broadway Musicals. He then studied conducting and musical theatre singing at the Royal College of Music.
As M.D., assistant, supervisor and/or orchestrator, he’s worked on over 20 shows in the West End and internationally. He’s conducted Dame Shirley’s performances at Carnegie Hall, the Oscars, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the Royal Variety Show, and numerous appearances at the Royal Albert Hall, with leading orchestras worldwide. Other international artistes he’s conducted include Alfie Boe, Andrea Bocelli and Paloma Faith. Stuart champions new musical theatre writing, and recently made his Friday Night Is Music Night debut, with a programme celebrating new musicals from Showboat to Jason Robert Brown. Most recently, he was musical director for the workshops of Radio 4: the Musical, and Eric Whitacre’s Paradise Lost.
He also works extensively with choirs, has judged on BBC Choir of the Year since 2008, and was Chorus Master on the Sondheim 80th birthday BBC Prom. His screen profile includes being the on-screen singing coach and mentor for the singing edition of C4’s Hidden Talent, and more recently the making of Hello Like Before.
